Choosing What Words or Name to Get Tattooed
Lettering is one of the most requested styles: children’s names, important dates, phrases that give you strength at a specific moment in your life. My only advice here is that less is usually more, the shorter and more specific the phrase, the better the tattoo will age. It is very common for someone to arrive wanting to fit a long phrase into a small area, and that is where I need to slow things down a bit and help you condense it without losing its meaning.
Language and the Risk of a Bad Translation
If you are getting a phrase tattooed in a language you do not speak fluently, check it with a native speaker or a professional translator before coming to the appointment. There are too many stories of tattoos in Japanese, Latin or English that, because of a bad translation or a grammatical nuance, end up saying something very different from what the person wanted. At the consultation I will review the phrase with you before tattooing, but checking the exact meaning in another language is something you should bring already sorted.
Which Typeface Works on Skin
Not all typefaces age the same way. A fine, cursive script looks beautiful on day one, but over the years it tends to blur a little, especially in areas with more movement like the hands or ribs. A bolder or serif-based typeface holds up better over time and stays legible a decade later. Letter spacing (kerning) matters too: if the letters sit too close together, the ink can end up blending together over the years.
Size, Body Area and Future Legibility
The forearm and the inner arm are stable areas, ideal for slightly longer texts. Ribs and hands hurt more and tend to lose sharpness sooner.
