How to Care for a Fresh Tattoo
A step-by-step guide for the first few weeks after getting tattooed, with what you should and should not do.
The First 24 Hours
Remove the dressing after the time you were told at your appointment (this varies depending on the type of dressing used). Wash the area with lukewarm water and neutral soap, without rubbing. Pat dry gently using disposable paper, never a cloth towel. Do not cover it again unless you were specifically told to.
First Week
Apply a thin layer of healing cream 2-3 times a day. Avoid clothing rubbing directly against the area. Itching is normal, but do not scratch. Showers are fine, no baths or soaking.
Second and Third Week
The skin may start to peel or form a thin scab: this is a normal part of healing, do not pick at it. Keep applying cream until the skin regains its normal texture.
What to Avoid While Healing
- Direct sun and UV tanning beds
- Pools, the beach and hot tubs until fully healed
- Very tight clothing over the area
- Heavy-sweat exercise in the first 48 hours
- Scratching or picking at scabs
When to See a Doctor
Normal healing includes mild redness, itching and some swelling in the first few days. If you notice strong swelling, intense heat, pus or fever, or if something does not feel right, check with your doctor or pharmacist — do not just wonder about it.
Tattoo Aftercare FAQs
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
The surface skin usually heals in 2-3 weeks, but full healing underneath takes longer, between 4 and 6 weeks depending on the area and size.
Can I go to the pool or the beach while it heals?
No, not until the skin is fully closed. Pool and sea water can irritate the area and increase the risk of infection.
What cream should I use?
Any healing cream specifically for tattoos, or a neutral, fragrance-free cream recommended by your pharmacist. I will give you specific guidance at the appointment.
Is it normal for it to itch?
Yes, itching is a normal part of healing. Do not scratch: if the skin feels very tight, apply more cream instead of scratching.
